    What model should a beginner start building with in 2026?

    Start with a hosted API from a frontier lab so you're not fighting infrastructure on day one. Build one small end-to-end thing — a chatbot over your own notes — before you touch fine-tuning or self-hosting. The model matters far less than your eval loop.

    RAG or fine-tuning — how do I choose?

    Default to RAG. It's cheaper, updatable, and citeable. Reach for fine-tuning only when you need a specific style/format the model won't hold, or you've squeezed retrieval dry. Most "we need to fine-tune" problems are really "our retrieval is bad" problems.
